Bad North is an easy-to-play-hard-to-master RTS where you have to defend your tiny island from Viking invaders. While the two games look slightly alike – in that they’re both set on islands and look pretty – their concepts are polar opposites. Made by solo indie developer Oskar Stålberg, previously a technical artist at Ubisoft and a Unity developer at UsTwo, the calming Townscaper couldn’t be further from his previous project, the Viking strategy game Bad North.

You don’t need to worry about how much wood or iron or townspeople you have, you just tap and place a building down wherever you fancy. Two features that set Townscaper apart from other city-builders are the complete lack of resource management and the irregular grid pattern. It’s a great game to use if you want to make towns for D&D campaigns and need a visual reference for your party. It left early access in August of this year and also launched on the Nintendo Switch, selling half a million copies across the two platforms. Townscaper originally launched on Steam in early access back in June 2020. Pastel buildings easily snap together to create a cosy cacophony of colour that’s sure to help you relax on your commute into work, or whenever you need a little break from reality. More of a digital toy than a game, Townscaper allows you to build a vibrant island settlement with just a tap of the screen.
